Joan Alleen Sanders Downey was born August 26, 1934 in Amarillo, Texas to Burl and Goldie Sanders and went to her heavenly home on January 1, 2018 while residing in Round Rock, Texas.
As Joan was growing up, her family moved to Big Spring, Texas and then to San Antonio, where Joan graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1951. At the age of 19, she met Charles Downey, the man who was to become her husband. They were married soon after and remained so until her passing.
Over the years Joan and Charles lived in Houston, Shreveport, Nashville, Quitman, Texas and New Waverly, Texas. During these years, Joan gave birth to their three children: Charles Jr., David, and Cathy.
While in Nashville, Joan was employed by Commerce Union Bank as manager of the women's division of that bank, which was remarkable as Joan had no college education and no banking experience. She and Charles started a personnel firm which Joan managed. In 1974, the family moved back to Texas where Charles and Joan opened a White Auto Store in Quitman, which Joan also managed. The family later moved to Conroe, Texas where she helped Charles care for his aging parents. During this time, Charles served as associate pastor of the First Baptist Church in Conroe and Joan assisted him by directing the senior adult ministry, the "Live Wires" and assisted Charles in others aspects of his ministry.
Joan was loved by all who knew her and was a devoted wife and mother. She is survived by her husband, Charles and her three children, Charles Downey, Jr., David Downey and Catherine Lawrence. Her grandchildren, Nichole Moore, Brooks Chambers, Chas Downey, C.J. Downey and Davey Downey, as well as her great-grandchildren, Brody, Finley and Sawyer Moore, and Pippin Chambers also survive. The family request, donations to The Waverly Cemetery Association P.O. Box 307 New Waverly, Texas 77358. A private family service was held Friday January 5, 2018.
